As we begin Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, we are reminded of the profound impact recent federal actions and orders have had on our communities. This has been a particularly challenging time for sexual assault survivors, especially within trans and immigrant communities, who are feeling increasingly unsafe in their daily lives—whether at work, in schools, or even when seeking essential support services.
For community nonprofits like KCSARC, every new order compounds the uncertainty we face, especially as massive cuts to VOCA—a critical federal resource—threaten the availability of victim services in King County and across the state.
Yet, we are witnessing something extraordinary—the unwavering resilience of our community.
Our community’s resilience was evident on March 18 when over 600 supporters gathered for KCSARC’s 36th annual BE LOUD Breakfast. This event not only raised crucial funds for survivor services and prevention programs but also showcased the power of collective action.
In the lead-up to Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, our community came together, sharing their strength through music as we created the Survivor Empowerment playlist. My personal contribution to this playlist is True Colors by Cyndi Lauper, a song that I hope will inspire survivors to honor their resilience and embrace the beauty of their authentic selves. By sharing our songs and messages of hope, we’ve created a space where survivors feel supported, empowered, and—most importantly—not alone.
Our commitment to building community resilience is woven throughout our programming. A New Day, for example, equips parents and caregivers with the tools to support their children’s recovery. Empowered Voices gives survivors a platform to share their stories, inspiring communities and policymakers. Our Youth Advisory Council amplifies the voices of teens dedicated to preventing sexual violence. These groups foster connection, empowerment and resilience—offering hope for a brighter future.
This month, let’s continue to build resilience and community power. Educate yourself on the signs of grooming by tuning into our podcast or by joining our webinar on April 8. Show your solidarity by participating in today’s day of action—wear teal or your BE LOUD button to spark important conversations. You can also listen to and share our Survivor Empowerment playlist, and explore the uplifting messages behind each song submission.
Your belief in our shared mission is crucial as we navigate challenges ahead. Together, we will continue being LOUD for survivors. Let us move forward with hope and determination, empowered by our collective resilience and unwavering commitment to creating a world free of sexual violence.
