My name is Kristy, and I am a survivor. I was sexually molested from the age of 6 to 12 years old. I lived in fear almost every day of my childhood. My parents did not want me to seek help, as it would be shameful for our family. When I turned 16, I became an alcoholic, self-mutilated, and had low self-esteem and self-worth. I was in numerous abusive relationships because I thought that love was pain.
Finally, at the age of 43, I received help at KSCARC. Getting help has truly saved my life, and words cannot describe how thankful I am. It has helped me become a stronger person and be more in control of my life. I no longer suffer from PTSD, and my thought process is more positive and hopeful.
To other survivors, I want to say that if you can seek help as soon as possible, trust me, it will benefit you. You are not alone; people care about you and want to help you through your healing process.
During therapy, I wrote this letter to my younger self.
Dear Kristy,
I just want to let you know that you are not alone and that there is love out there—people who care about you and want to help you. The pain will go away, and there will be hard times, but just know that you are strong enough to overcome this. If there is any advice I can give you right now, it would be to seek help. Receiving help will not only benefit you but your family as well. There are people out there who want to help you, will not judge you, and will support you.
I love you very much,
Kristy
