Abriendo Puertas project

Audience: Community Partners, Parents + Caregivers, Supporters, Survivors

Topic: Dando Voz, Legal System

Access to family law and immigration resources are important to increase safety for victims of sexual assault. Unfortunately, legal assistance options for low-income, Spanish-speaking victims of sexual assault in King County are either at capacity or offer only limited support.

The Abriendo Puertas project offers King County’s only holistic legal assistance program providing sexual assault victims access to immigration and family law expertise, all in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner.

Through our partnership with two local law firms, KCSARC is able to meet this need for our clients. KCSARC provides legal advocacy and assistance with Sexual Assault Protection Orders, while our immigration attorney partners assist clients with immigration issues, and our family law attorney partner helps clients with family law situations. This partnership has allowed clients to receive comprehensive, wrap-around legal support.

KCSARC’s Abriendo Puertas program meets the needs of Hispanic/Latinx victims of sexual assault related to:
  • Family and immigration law;
  • Building capacity of KCSARC’s Legal Advocates to assist more victims in obtaining Sexual Assault Protection Orders and with general legal advocacy; and
  • Providing cross-training and consultation to build core competencies.
